PSU (Public Sector Undertakings)

Public sector undertaking company (PSU) is a Government owned corporation or a company in which central or state government have more than 51% share. Basically, these government companies run like private companies and share profits to Government.

PSU’s in India, for long, have had troubles conducting their recruitment processes with more than 100,000 students taking the exams for less than 1000 jobs (a selection rate of less than 1%). After sensing the exponential rise in the number of engineering graduates in India who wish to get a PSU job, the PSUs have decided that a GATE score shall be the primary criteria for initial shortlisting. This change was the primary cause for the rapid increase in GATE 2012.

Usually these companies release their recruitment notifications right after GATE notification, indicating that candidates have to take GATE for a job in their organizations. Thus, GATE score is used as a screening tool for recruiting engineers at entry level positions.

Many PSUs have been awarded additional financial autonomy :

  • Maharatna

  • Navratna

  • Miniratna-I

  • Miniratna-II

Maharatna PSU

Three years with an Average Annual Net Profit of over Rs.5000 croresorAverage Annual Net worth of Rs.10,000 crores for 3 yearsorAverage Annual Turnover of Rs. 20,000 crores for 3 years (against Rs. 25,000 crores prescribed earlier)

Navratna PSU

A score of 60 (out of 100), based on six parameters which include net profit, net worth, total manpower cost, total cost of production, cost of services, PBDIT (Profit Before Depreciation, Interest and Taxes), capital employed, etc., andA company must first be a Miniratna and have 4 independent directors on its board before it can be made a Navratna.

Miniratna-I)

Have made profits continuously for the last three years or earned a net profit of Rs. 30 crore or more in one of the three years.

Miniratna-II

Have made profits continuously for the last three years and should have a positive net worth.
